Guest Post for Blue School of Motoring

When routines are so easy to fall into, whether it’s return trips to your local Tesco or your daily commute for work, your car can feel like nothing more than a tool to get you from A to B. No matter how fiery the love of your car was when you first saw it, all relationships have their peaks and valleys, and sometimes you need a little spark to reignite your vehicular romance.

With the summer approaching and the bitterness of winter in our rear view mirror, we decided to look at the best holidays for car lovers all over the world – sure to reboot the passion of any motor heads out there, or just remind the devoted why they love cars so much.

Road Trips to Take

It might come as no surprise that southern France, the home of the Monaco Grand Prix, is home to plenty of sights that will make car fans froth at the mouth – Verdon Gorge is one of these sights. Located in Provence, you can find this majestic stretch of road 2,300 feet above the clear blue Lac de Sainte Croix Lake below, and the sheer drop crevices won’t let you forget it.

From Antibes, Cannes or Nice, the road trip can be completed in about a day, but it’s worth checking traffic ahead of time; as nice as they views are, you want to experience them ripping 60 mph down the tarmac and not at a walking pace behind a line of other drivers.

Ring Road, Iceland

With active volcanoes to your left and chilling ice glaciers to your right, not to mention the Northern Lights and deafening waterfalls, spectacle is certainly not lacking from the Ring Road. The 1332km stretch of road hits locations like Borgarnes, Rekjavic and Selfoss as it loops around the coast of the country, hence the name “Ring Road”.

As you can imagine for a road that passes both active volcanoes and glaciers, the conditions vary greatly depending on when you intend to hit the road. We would recommend visiting in the summer, where experts say you should take at least a week to take it all in – closer to a fortnight for those travelling in winter months, however. This is because there are just so many great sights to see, and to finish the route in the 16-17 hours the 55 mph limit allows is to only enjoy a fraction of what the route offers.

Museums to Visit

Built around the legendary Schlumpf Collection of classic automobiles and located in Mulhous in eastern France, the Cite de l’Automobile is considered one of the best vehicular museums in the world. In particular, it boasts the most comprehensive collection of Bugatti vehicles and over 520 vehicles altogether; from grids of Type 35 Bugattis and Type 41 Royale’s, to pre-war Grand Prix cars and Maserati 250F’s.

Whether you’re the biggest Porsche fan around or you just like a classic car, the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart will leave you hating the car you drove there in. Consisting of several small exhibits as opposed to a singular large one, there is a great variety to what’s on offer.

Between the Porsche Touchwall – a 12 meter long interactive installation that covers almost every Porsche car ever – and the extensive selection of concept and rare vehicles, even the kids will be too busy to sulk about being in a museum.

Experiences to Have

Museums are a blast, but sometimes us gearheads have an itch that just looking at cars won’t scratch; sometimes we need to be right behind the wheel and in control of every bit of horsepower the vehicle can produce. That feeling of weight and control when driving a car is hard to replicate, so why bother? At the Goodwood Circuit, you can drive a wide variety of cars around the historical track – even if you can’t afford a BMW i8, you can still drive one.

The 12,000 acre estate is also home to two championship golf courses, a hotel with a spa, an organic farm, an aerodrome and even more, so you can easily evolve this experience from a day trip to a weekend away!

Off Road Driving Experience, Bovey Castle

Ever felt like one more pot hole could spell the end for your car? Well, some cars are just made tougher than others, and drives don’t get much tougher than what Bovey Castle offer with this off road driving experience. The white knuckle experience puts you in command of a Land Rover Defender and lets you loose onto the Dartmoor countryside, providing you a rare opportunity to attack your path instead of simply traversing it.

You’re provided with a demonstration from their instructors to lead you through everything that should and could happen, but with cars as nigh-on death proof as the Defender – and a garage bill that you won’t need to worry about – this is all about having pure, hedonistic fun.
