What you need to know when choosing a Driving Instructor in Reading

For many young people, turning seventeen is a major milestone.  Not only are you that little bit closer, to officially being classed as an adult, you can start learning to drive.

 

When it comes to applying for your driving licence, you don’t need to wait until the day of your birthday.  A provisional driving licence can be applied for, up to three months prior.  You can apply either in person, or by post.  The process itself is relatively straightforward.  Simply pop into your local Post Office and pick up a D1 application form.  Once you have completed this form, you will need to send it off to the DVLA, along with a piece of original documentation confirming your identity, a passport style photograph and the relevant fee.

Once you have received your provisional driving licence, the next step is to find a driving instructor.  Both friends and family may offer, however the best way to learn to drive, is with a qualified driving instructor.

Personal recommendations are one of the best places to start, however if you happen to be the first of your friends turning seventeen, you may need to look online.

Regardless of which route you go down, make sure you call and have a chat first, before handing any money over.  Some driving instructors also offer either a free first lesson, or one that is discounted, so make sure you ask when you call.

Price and Lesson Length – The average price tends to be in the region of £25.  If you are interested however, in having longer lessons i.e. 90 minutes or 2 hours, you should pay less than the standard hourly rate, as these lessons save driving instructors money

Qualifications – All driving instructors must be on the Driver Standards Agency register, either as a trainee instructor, or one that is fully qualified.  If you’re driving instructor Reading is fully qualified, he will display a green badge in his vehicle.  If however, it is pink, he is still a trainee.

Car – Whilst in essence this shouldn’t make a difference, it is recommended that you don’t learn in one, which is larger than your typical family car.  The smaller the car, the easier it is to manoeuvre!
