You’ve passed your test. Now your ready for Pass Plus, the intensive training course that will help you become a better driver and get a discount on your insurance. So besides improving your driving skills, it could help you save money.

Who can take part?
You can take Pass Plus within your first year of passing the practical driving test.

What’s involved?
When you get your full driving licence, you can book for a course of 6 specially designed training sessions.

There is no further test to take. When your instructor is satisfied with your performance you receive a certificate from the Driving Standards Agency(DSA). This certificate will earn you a substantial discount on your insurance premium from one of the companies in the scheme.

Why more training?

As a new driver, you are more likely to have an accident in the first than at any other time in your motoring career. Lack of experience means that you can be as much as TWO SECONDS slower than a more practised motorist.

Young new drivers are especially vulnerable. They hold only 10% of licences, but they are involved in 20% of road accidents in which someone is injured.

Pass Plus gives you valuable extra experience and positive driving skills that would otherwise take a long time to acquire. You should be a safer and better driver.

How can I find out more?

Here is a list of participating insurers & brokers. You should contact the insurers to find which is the best offer for your circumstances. Most of the major insurance companies – but not all – support the scheme.

How Pass Plus training works

Pass Plus training takes at least 6 hours. It has 6 modules, covering driving:

  • in town
  • in all weathers
  • on rural roads
  • at night
  • on dual carriageways
  • on motorways

All modules should be practical sessions, although local conditions may mean some are theory based. You’ll normally spend at least 5.5 hours driving.

You will not take a test but you’ll be assessed throughout the course. To pass you’ll have to reach the required standard in all modules.

Contact the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Pass Plus team for more information.

Apply for a Pass Plus certificate

You must apply for your own Pass Plus certificate if you want one.

You need a certificate if you want a discount on your car insurance.

You’ll get a training report form from your instructor when you’ve reached the required standard in all modules. You and your instructor must sign the form.

Send the signed form to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). You’ll be sent a certificate by post.

Car insurance discounts

Once you’ve completed Pass Plus you may be able to get a car insurance discount. You’ll need your Pass Plus certificate.

Check with insurers that you can still get a discount if you passed your practical driving test more than a year ago.

The amount of discount depends on the insurance company. Not all insurers offer Pass Plus discounts.

You might be able to put the discount on hold for up to 2 years if you do not have a car at the moment – check with the insurance company first.

Over 1,000 successful candidates per month have enjoyed the benefits of advanced training and insurance discounts, since the scheme stated in February 1995.

Blue are members of the DSA approved register and are qualified to teach Pass Plus.
