Main Points about the Driving Test

In the UK, the practical driving test assesses your ability to drive safely and independently while following the Highway Code. As of April 2026, the test follows a standard structure lasting approximately 40 minutes.

The Main Parts of the Test

Eyesight Check: You must read a vehicle number plate from a distance of 20 metres (or 20.5m for old-style plates). If you fail this, the test ends immediately.

‘Tell Me’ Question: Before you start driving, the examiner will ask one vehicle safety question where you explain how to carry out a specific check (e.g., checking tyre tread depth or oil levels).

General Driving Ability: You will drive in various road and traffic conditions (excluding motorways) following the examiner’s directions. This includes:

Normal stops at the side of the road.

Pulling out from behind a parked vehicle.

A hill start.

An Emergency Stop (required in 1 out of every 3 tests).

Reversing Manoeuvre: The examiner will ask you to perform one of the following exercises:

Parallel park at the side of the road.

Park in a bay (either driving in and reversing out, or vice versa).

Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for two car lengths, and rejoin traffic.

Independent Driving: For roughly 20 minutes, you will drive without step-by-step directions. In most cases (4 in 5), you will follow a sat nav provided by the examiner; otherwise, you will follow traffic signs. You will also be asked one ‘Show Me’ question during this part (e.g., showing how to wash the windscreen while driving).

Marking & Results

Pass Criteria: You pass if you make 15 or fewer driving faults (minors) and no serious or dangerous faults (majors).

Immediate Fails: Committing a serious or dangerous fault, failing the eyesight check, or bringing an unsuitable vehicle.

Feedback: At the end, the examiner will tell you if you passed or failed and provide a summary of any faults via email.
