Learning to Drive Crossing Traffic
Blue School of Motoring can tailor a driving course that will help you cope with all of the following. Your driving instructor can help you with this.
When you are learning to drive, crossing traffic, which is basically turning right from major to minor roads can be a very nerve wracking experience, so listen to your driving instructor when they give you your lesson briefing on this subject.
If you have a round green light if you are turning right you would normally creep out into the middle of the junction (as shown in pic) YOU MUST GIVE WAY TO ONCOMING TRAFFIC and wait for a gap in the oncoming traffic do not cause an oncoming vehicle to have to slow down or change course! Ensure your waiting position will not hinder oncoming traffic or traffic opposite you also turning right.
Sometimes you will see an extra green filter arrow to turn right. At some junctions this will be on straight away at others it may come on after the main green phase to allow people to turn right. If a green filter arrow comes on you may turn right without needing to giveway as oncoming traffic has been stopped. If there is a gap in the traffic before the filter arrow comes on you may still go, but beware of pedestrians and other road users still turning.
